Background on the PwD

The People with Disabilities Advisory Committee (PwD) was established in 1983 by the Montclair Township Council and is one of the first of its kind in New Jersey. The committee is charged with promoting the welfare of residents with disabilities by developing and maintaining community awareness of people with disabilities, and serving as a resource for residents and visitors. It is both an advocate for members of the Montclair community living with disability and an advisor to the Township Council regarding such individuals.

The PwD makes recommendations regarding programs, legislation, and policies to assist the Township Council in achieving its goals of inclusion and diversity. Issues addressed by the committee involve every stage of life from childhood to adulthood, including education, transportation, parking, employment, recreation, and affordable and accessible housing for the disabled.

The PwD is actively engaged in the full implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”).

Members of the committee include people with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities, caregivers, and representatives from organizations that serve this community.

The PwD holds meetings on a monthly basis at the Montclair Municipal Building located at 205 Claremont Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month from September to June at 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and are open to the public.
