The New Jersey Department of Human Services - Disability Programs works in partnership with families, consumers, advocacy groups, service providers and state and municipal officials throughout the state to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities are protected and that they and their families have access to quality programs and services that meet their needs. Services include, but are not limited to, the provision of health care for people with special needs, community living, employment-related and day programs, community-based mental health and in-patient care for both children and adults with emotional and behavioral problems, and assistive technological devices for people who are blind or deaf. Disability Rights New Jersey (“DRNJ”) advocates and advances the human, civil and legal rights of persons with disabilities. All requests for assistance are processed by DRNJ's Intake Office. The vast majority of requests for assistance are received and processed by telephone or via email. The Intake Office is available to perform intake interviews by telephone or in-person by appointment Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The website also has many useful links to other disability related agencies and organizations. Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of New Jersey (“PLAN/NJ”) is a not-for profit agency that assists families with loved ones living with physical, intellectual, developmental or mental health disabilities help plan for and provide the legal, financial, and independent living supports they need and deserve, now and in the future. The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. Call the main office 800-772-1213 or TTY: 800-325-0778. The local office is located at 935 Allwood Road, Clifton, NJ 07012.

The American’s with Disabilities Act (“ADA”). This Federal landmark legislation was adopted in 1995. It covers employment, state and local government facilities (buildings, transportation), public accommodations (stores, theaters and medical offices) and telecommunications. The ADA National Network provides more information, guidance and training on how to implement the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to support the mission of the ADA to “assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.”
