April 2018: Bob Schwartz

How old are you?  69 Bob Schwartz

Where were you born? I was born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts

When did you move to Montclair? I moved to Montclair in 2013

Why did you move to Montclair? This is the wonderful town where my wife of five years lives. I’ve been a resident of New Jersey for 40+ years. My late wife and I raised two terrific kids in Glen Rock.

Are you currently employed?  If so, doing what?  If you had a career, what was it? I am a retired eater engineer. I’ve been involved in the planning, design and construction of water and wastewater facilities across the country.

How are you currently engaged in the community? As a volunteer for the New Jersey State Health Insurance Assistance Program, I provide assistance to Montclair seniors, who can make an appointment with me at the Montclair Public Library by calling 973-637-1717. I am also on the board of directors of the Montclair inn, a not-for-profit facility that provides affordable, dignified housing for 22 single seniors who are physically and mentally able to independently manage their daily living activities.

What organizations or clubs are affiliated with or a member of? I am currently the secretary of the Montclair Rotary Club. I am also a member of Dunworkin, a social club that fosters good fellowship and communication among retired and semi-retired residents of Montclair and nearby communities.

Have you done any volunteer work? If so what type and with what organization? For several years. I have been a volunteer tutor with Streetsquash Newark, a comprehensive after school youth enrichment program that combines intensive academic support with squash instruction, on-on-one mentoring, service learning, college access and preparation and professional development for young people from adolescence through college graduation. The kids practice and study here in Montclair and in Newark.

What is your mantra or words you live by? Always be mindful. Mindfulness is about observation without criticism; being compassionate with yourself and all other beings.

What are some of the most important lessons you feel you have learned throughout your life?  Anything that’s worthwhile requires commitment, hard work and respect for others. Decency, stewardship of the environment and care for all living things matter most. Our actions directly impact future generations.

What are your plans for future? How does Montclair fit into these plans? To fully enjoy good health, good friends, thoughtful discourse and the creativity of all those around us, here in this truly wonderful community.
