Several sports greats have lived in Montclair:
Tennis star Althea Gibson was victorious at Wimbledon, the French Open and the US open. The Associated Press named her female athlete of the year in 1957 and again in 1958.
Baseball superstar Yogi Berra. Everybody knew him and his wife Carmen. "When you get to the fork in the road, take it.” The fork in the road is at Edgewood Terrace (where the Berras lived) and Edgewood Road. The Township honored the baseball legend by giving Edgewood Terrace an alternate name – Yogi Berra Way.
The second African American in professional baseball, Larry Doby, who also became the second African American manager when he managed the White Sox in 1974.
The Star Ledger called Aubrey Lewis the greatest high school offensive football player of the 20th century. He also excelled at basketball and track, setting a world record for the 400 meter hurdles.
George “Mule” Hass was a star centerfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics. His home run led the way to their championship in the 1929 World Series.
Wally Choice owned a drugstore on Bloomfield Ave. He is probably best known for starting the Montclair Grass Roots organization for kids, but some people remember him as a player for the famous Harlem Globetrotters.
Although he didn’t have a fabulous career on the field, nobody can forget the catch that David Tyree made in 2008 so the Giants could go on to win Super Bowl 42.
