Montclair 150

Montclair celebrated a special anniversary on April 15 – the day, 150 years ago when it became a township. To observe this milestone, Glenfield Middle School social studies teacher Dan Gill and his students prepared a re-enactment of the very first council meeting which was held April 15, 1868, marking the founding of the Township of Montclair. Other students acted as historic ambassadors, answering a variety of questions about the Township’s history. The event was held in the Glenfield Middle School auditorium.

The Township is also planning a series of events that will be held throughout the year, including an expanded sesquicentennial themed July 4th parade which will be followed by a greatly expanded festival in Edgemont Memorial Park.

A township-wide New Year’s Eve celebration is also in the works with satellite celebratory events throughout the Township, each visited by the Mayor and Township Council. The celebrations will conclude with a gala event.

Additional events and activities are being planned with partner organizations including a “150 Days of Montclair” listing of special promotions and cultural events throughout town, a runway presentation of historic clothing in the Montclair Center BID Fashion Show, music performances, a vintage-styled selfie station and themed demonstrations and talks.

"As we mark Montclair’s 150th anniversary, we celebrate the diversity, community and rich history of the place we proudly call home,” said Mayor Robert Jackson. “We invite everyone to take part in these events to help us commemorate the sesquicentennial in true Montclair form.”

A Montclair 150 mobile app is now available. It lists cultural and community events from organizations throughout the Township. The app was developed in partnership with the Montclair Center Business Improvement District (BID) and is available on the Apple App and Google Play stores. Also check the 150th Anniversary section on the township website for listings of upcoming events and promotions.
